Awesome Associates – Juan Ortiz, Field Crew Chief (Jacksonville, FL)
Hi, Juan! Thanks for being an Awesome Associate at WGI. Tell us a little bit about where you’re from and where you went to school.
I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in a small town on the west side of the island, called San German. I earned my bachelor’s degree in land surveying from the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez Campus. In 2013, I decided to move to Washington, D.C. where I started my career, and in July 2019 I moved to Florida.
What drew you to this profession?
My father has always worked in the construction industry, and since I was a kid, I wanted to be like him. When I started college, a degree in Civil Engineering was what I had in mind… but once I took my first Land Surveying course, it completely caught my attention. Since then, I have loved this amazing career.
What types of projects have you worked on?
I have worked on both private and government projects between the states of Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, learning more about market trading, playing basketball, and reading.
Have you read any good books lately?
“Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki.
What was your first job?
My first job was at a supermarket in Puerto Rico.
When I’m creatively stuck, I…
Try to relax my mind through rest or meditation.
What would be impossible for you to give up?
The way my two puppies look at me when they want something.
Any interesting facts about yourself that you’d like to share?
My wife and I will be celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary on December 21st, and we’re expecting our first daughter!
Who or what inspires you?
Definitely my parents. The way they worked so hard and how they always inspired me to become a better person every day.
Everyone at WGI has a story about why they joined the team. What’s yours?
During my years in college, I met Randy Ortega, who works at WGI in West Palm Beach. When I moved to Florida, he told me about WGI’s culture and team-oriented atmosphere and that motivated me to be part of it.
