Ray Valido

At WGI, we know our success starts with our associates and that’s why we want to share their awesome stories with you.

Raymond ValidoTell us a little bit about where you’re from and where you went to school: I was born and raised in Miami by my Cuban parents. I received both my Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from Florida International University.

What drew you to this profession? When I was 13, instead of going to summer camp I would “go to work” with my grandfather who owned his own small business. He specialized in the construction of driveways and pools. During those summers I gained an appreciation for seeing things be constructed. I saw that civil engineering would give me the opportunity to be involved in the construction industry in one way or another.

What types of projects have you worked on? I work on all types of roadway projects. I’ve worked on safety, resurfacing, widening, reconstruction, and new alignment transportation projects ranging from a construction cost of $500,000 to $500,000,000.

What’s your get-pumped song? AC/DC Thunderstruck.

What do you like to do in your free time? Run, fish, and travel.

Have you read any good books lately? “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team”. It was recommended to us by David Wantman as part of PM Training.

What does your ideal vacation look like? Somewhere with good food, good sights, and far away from my house.

What was your first job? If you don’t count the $100 a week I was making from my grandfather during the summers, then my first official job when I was 16 was working for a seafood distributor filing their invoices after school.

When I’m creatively stuck, I… Take a break and go run.

What would be impossible for you to give up? My dream of owning a boat. I’ve owned one, sold it, but I still dream of buying a better, newer boat.

Any interesting facts about yourself that you’d like to share? I have a twin sister, who is not an engineer. I share my birthday with her, obviously, but I also share my birthday with my older sister and my niece. We are all 7/11.

Who or what inspires you? My parents. My parents immigrated from Cuba and they’ve sacrificed a lot for my siblings and me to have a good life. Knowing their sacrifices has always inspired me to never settle and always push myself.

Everyone at WGI has a story about why they joined the team. What’s yours? I used to work at FDOT and I decided I wanted to try out the private sector. I had a very good relationship with my coworkers and I told them that I was looking to make the jump from the public sector to the private sector.

The news traveled and soon after I received some calls from various consulting firms, including a call from Andy Garganta, the WGI Miami Office Manager, a very well respected transportation guru. As soon as I met with Andy and David I was sold on WGI. WGI was punching above its weight class. They were small enough to be nimble and I knew I wouldn’t be “just another employee”. They were also large enough to handle any size project that came their way. That was the perfect mix.

Thanks for your time, Raymond. We’re happy to have you on the WGI team!
