E-Week 2026: Measuring Community Impact

This Engineering Week, we’re celebrating WGI associates who are making a difference beyond the office. From mentoring students to volunteering and supporting STEM initiatives, their passion and dedication are inspiring the next generation of engineers and shaping the future of our profession.

Engineering Week is a time to recognize the impact engineers have on the world around us; not only through the infrastructure we design, but through the communities we serve. At WGI, that commitment extends beyond our projects and into the classrooms, campuses, and communities where our associates volunteer their time and expertise.

Through mentorship and hands-on engagement, our team members are helping inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators. This Engineering Week, we’re proud to highlight just a few examples of how our WGI associates are making a difference beyond the workplace.

Sparking Curiosity and Inspiring Future Engineers

One of the most powerful ways to inspire future innovators is through early exposure, and WGI volunteers embraced that opportunity all year long. Across multiple regions, associates participated in school career days and STEM outreach events, connecting with students from elementary through university levels.

In San Antonio, volunteers spent time with hundreds of elementary students, introducing them to civil engineering by linking real-world projects to everyday experiences. From clean water systems to roadway design and stormwater management, students learned how engineering plays a role in the world they see around them. These interactive conversations encouraged questions, imagination, and the exciting possibility of STEM careers.

At the university level, WGI associates returned to campuses as alumni and former interns, offering students a firsthand look at life after graduation. Career fairs and networking events became opportunities to share professional journeys, discuss career paths, and reinforce the value of persistence, curiosity, and hands-on learning.

Mentorship That Builds Confidence and Opportunity

Beyond one-day outreach events, many WGI associates committed to longer-term mentorship roles through programs like ACE Mentor, Engineer It!, Future Cities, and bridge-building competitions. These initiatives challenged students to apply engineering concepts through design, collaboration, and presentation, often mirroring real-world problem-solving scenarios.

Mentors guided students through months of learning, helping them refine ideas, overcome obstacles, and build confidence in their abilities. For many volunteers, these experiences were deeply personal, offering the chance to give back to programs that once supported their own educational journeys. The result was meaningful mentorship that extended far beyond technical lessons, reinforcing leadership, teamwork, and resilience.

Serving Communities and Protecting Our Environment

WGI’s volunteer impact in 2025 also reached into environmental stewardship and community service. Teams participated in shoreline cleanups and supported wildlife rehabilitation efforts, helping preserve natural habitats and care for injured animals.

From collecting debris along sensitive coastal areas to assisting wildlife centers with daily operations, associates demonstrated that engineering values don’t stop at infrastructure; they extend to protecting the environments where communities live, work, and play. These hands-on efforts reflect WGI’s broader commitment to sustainability, responsibility, and community partnership.

Living the Meaning of Engineering

Across every volunteer initiative, one theme remained consistent: our associates showed up with purpose. Whether mentoring students or cleaning shorelines, they embodied our core values: Passion for People, Commitment to Greatness, and Be the Change You Seek.

As we celebrate Engineering Week, we’re proud to recognize the collective impact of our associates. Their dedication reminds us that engineering is not just about what we build, but about who we inspire, support, and uplift along the way.

Thank you to the associates who continue to give their time, talents, and hearts to these efforts. Your impact reaches far beyond the workday, and the future is brighter because of it!
