I-75 EXPRESS LANES SEGMENTS A&B
Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, FL
I-75 Segment AB is the third of three consecutive design-build projects that WGI won with different lead contractors. Our ability to deliver all three segments (with a total construction value of $466M) illustrates our capacity to deliver large projects. WGI’s innovative design and collaboration drove the addition of numerous enhancements to the project, significantly improving overall system-to-system operation, reducing environmental impacts, improving safety, enhancing construction efficiency, and reducing overall construction cost. This project is a complex section of a series of express lane additions within a network of limited-access facilities. This project added express lanes within the I-75 median; reconstruction, widening, and milling and resurfacing of the I-75 mainline; and other interchange ramp connections. It included widening, milling and resurfacing the adjacent Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike (HEFT) mainline to connect to the new I-75 Express Lanes. WGI’s innovations recaptured $200,000 in mitigation credits thanks to a more efficient interchange and a six-acre decrease in wetland impacts. The design eliminated the need for a future divided arterial roadway, saving $10M, and returned two acres of TIFF lands to the Miami-Dade County School Board, and eliminated the need for extensive noise mitigation. This approximately 27-mile stretch of I-75 is one of the first corridors in Florida to benefit from the implementation of express lanes. Thanks to the team’s design-build expertise, this project’s express lanes were opened weeks ahead of schedule, earning the team $1.12M in incentives.
