I-75 EXPRESS LANES SEGMENTS A&B
Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, FL
Segment AB is the largest and most complex segment of the I-75 corridor, and extends 3.1 miles. This $233 million segment provides express lanes in the existing I-75 median and reconstruction of the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike to accommodate a third-level direct median-to-median flyover express lane and new systems’ interchange movements, as well as new CD roads and ramps at the Miami Gardens interchange. Design changes required extensive permitting efforts and significant coordination of design parameters so as not to exceed previously permitted wetland impacts that had pre-purchased mitigation credits. The improvements included 10 new bridges, the widening of four bridges and one bridge deck replacement. This mitigation was not only required for jurisdictional wetland impacts, but also to offset suitable foraging habitat for the federally endangered wood stork, which in turn required the creation of offsetting foraging areas to reduce the required amount of mitigation.
