I-75 WIDENING FROM SOUTH OF SR 50 TO NORTH OF SR 50 TO SUMTER COUNTY LINE
Hernando County, FL
The WGI team’s Design-Build for this project combined our ability to perform on an aggressive schedule while doing what we do best: intelligently improve constructability, durability, ease of maintenance, and integrating plans for future expansion, all with an eye to the aesthetics, and preservation and continuous access to both the Florida Scenic Trail and the Withlacoochee River State Trail.
The Team added new lanes and rehabbed existing lanes of I-75, replaced bridges over US 98, and extensive improvements to all of the involved structures, earthworks, walls, guardrails, signalization, and more. Widening and interchange reconstruction resulted in a net six-lane facility that is ready for later expansions to eight and ten lanes. Widening SR 50 to a six-lane urban typical section used a design that both optimized traffic operations while accommodating pedestrian safety.
Of particular note was replacement of two mid-1960s bridges with new designs that are wider, more efficient, and are user-friendly to motorist, pedestrian, and worker alike.
