I-75 EXPRESS LANES SEGMENTS A&B

Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, FL

A complex part of the implementation of express lanes in a network of limited-access facilities, WGI’s innovative design and collaboration drove the addition of numerous enhancements to the project, significantly improving the overall system-to-system operation, reducing environmental impacts, improving safety, enhancing construction efficiencies, and reducing overall construction costs. This project consisted of adding express lanes within the I-75 median; reconstruction, widening, and milling and resurfacing of the I-75 mainline; and other interchange ramp connections, including major improvements to the Miami Gardens Drive interchange. The project also required widening and milling and resurfacing of the adjacent Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike (HEFT) mainline to accommodate the express lane connection with I-75. By creating a more efficient interchange configuration, and reducing wetland impacts by more than six acres, $200,000 of mitigation credits were recaptured. I-95 at St. Johns Heritage Parkway SE Brevard County, FL St. John’s Heritage Parkway SE design project is part of an important, multi-faceted extension and expansion of this vital transportation artery in Brevard County. The joint design team produced a new interchange configuration after the county’s originally proposed partial cloverleaf was deemed unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclists. The new vision, a diverging diamond interchange, will be Brevard County’s first. Today’s roadway designs must move traffic more efficiently and enhance safety for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, and WGI is at the forefront of the latest design needs, reducing speed and pedestrian crossing distances at intersections, adding new crossing signals, and minimizing the number of conflict points between vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles. At three spans each, WGI’s design of the new bridges accommodates the future six-laning of the parkway, expertly eliminating any additional widening. Innovations in drainage conveyance allowed the design team to reduce the MSE wall requirement by approximately 50%. In addition, more than 450 feet of jack & bore were eliminated, as well as 1700 lineal feet of deep excavation along the easement to preserve maintenance access. The design eliminated the need for a future planned divided arterial roadway, saving $10 million, and returned two acres of TIFF lands to the Miami-Dade County School Board for a future school site, in addition to extensive noise mitigation to communities along the project’s length. This approximately 27-mile stretch of I-75 is one of the first corridors in Florida to benefit from the implementation of express lanes.
