SEMINOLE TRIBE WETLAND MONITORING
Big Cypress and Brighton Seminole Indian Reservations, FL
For the 2016 wet season, the WGI team monitored five wetland mitigation areas, including a science-based vegetation inventory and calculations of percent cover, species richness, and species diversity. The sampling plots were in a variety of different habitats, including emergent marshes, cypress domes and sloughs, pop ash ponds, pine flatwoods, hardwood swamps, wet prairies, and hardwood hammocks.
The herbaceous layer and the sub-canopy were evaluated and compared to data from previous years to determine trends in wetland quality and assist with adaptive wetland management, and to assess compliance with permits, plant survival rates, invasive exotic vegetation coverage, and hydrology.
