SR 71O/BIG JOHN MONAHAN BRIDGE
Martin County, FL
This $32 million project increased capacity and improved safety by upgrading a two-mile section of State Road 710 that included replacing the Big John Monahan Bridge over the St. Lucie Canal. The Big John Monahan Bridge spans the Okeechobee Waterway, a designated Impaired Water Body, and runoff from the bridge contributes discharge to an Outstanding Florida Water. Five threatened and endangered species including the wood stork, bald eagle, Eastern Indigo snake, West Indian manatee, and the gopher tortoise were identified as having varying levels of interaction with the project. To ensure their utmost protection, the project was coordinated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
