Broward County Beach Renourishment

Broward County, FL
Project Size:
4.9 miles, 725,000 cubic yards of sand

Project Description

This beach renourishment project was a joint project between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Broward County. The project involved placement of approximately 725,000 cubic yards of sand along 4.9 miles of the coastline in Pompano Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, and Fort Lauderdale. In some areas, the project included construction of new dunes.

WGI provided environmental permit compliance services to the contractor to comply with the Federal Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits. The project necessitated some temporary damage to dunes and coastal vegetation to provide access between the roads and the beach. WGI conducted pre-construction and post-construction dune vegetation inventories to assess the damage at the five access points.

WGI prepared replanting plans and verified that the restoration was completed. WGI also conducted daily seabird and shorebird nest monitoring to comply with the permits.
