(West Palm Beach, FL – October 2011) The Cone & Graham/WGI Team that was recently awarded the $32 million Design-Build, Big John Monahan Bridge Replacement project in Martin County has developed a solution to meet the requirements of the contract while simultaneously accomplishing the public’s mandate for safety and fiscal accountability. By reducing the bridge length from the 1,951’ contemplated in the Concept Plans to 953’-8”, the Team was able to reduce the overall project cost by approximately $10 million. The bridge length reduction was achieved through diligent research and meetings with adjacent landowners that led to an innovative and cost saving approach to strategically acquire right-of-way from a willing seller. Ultimately, the project will increase capacity and improve safety along a critical hurricane evacuation route by upgrading a two-mile section of State Road 710, including replacement of the 700-foot Big John Monahan Bridge over the St. Lucie Canal.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to bring this savings to both our client and to the general public. Investments in transportation infrastructure positively affect the economy by fueling job creation and reducing travel times. FDOT’s willingness to accept our “outside the box” concept reflects their commitment to safeguard public funds, while also maintaining and improving our infrastructure” said David Wantman, PE, President of WGI.

As a multi-disciplinary consulting firm, WGI has offices throughout Florida and is comprised of eight separate divisions devoted to the following disciplines: Civil, Municipal and Transportation Engineering, Surveying, Subsurface Utility Engineering, Construction, Environmental and Planning services.
