WGI was responsible for the signal design for this intersection. Due to the location of the intersection, constraints such as building facades, canopies, limited right-ofway, street furniture, trees, overhead and underground utilities posed a feasibility challenge. WGI worked closely with the City of Austin to find innovative solutions, such as modifying the pole types for signal equipment, running conduit overhead, and limiting street crossings to two instead of four.
WGI also proposed a larger pole foundation to accommodate mast arms on one signal pole for two directions. These innovations and close coordination with the City minimized utility conflicts and maximized the limited right-of-way available to place signal infrastructure. Even with all the constraints, WGI designed drainage enhancements, curb bulbouts, curb ramps and landings, and pedestrian infrastructure to be ADA-compliant. in addition, WGI coordinated with Austin Energy for power connection as soon as the City approved the signal design to minimize construction delays associated with acquiring power supply for the traffic signals.
