The City of Boca Raton’s Fire Station 6 was demolished in February 2020 and the new facility took 11 months to build. The $5.2 million station features new and improved upgrades, including four apparatus bays that will house a new engine truck, medical unit, and two hazmat trucks, eight unisex bathrooms to facilitate the decontamination of all crew members at the same time in accordance with the national effort to prevent Firefighter cancer (“Shower Within an Hour”), and constructed to withstand sustained wind speed of 157 mph (Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale).

WGI was the special inspector responsible for performing inspections to ensure the construction of the structural components complied with the permitted contract documents.

The Structural components inspected were:

• Spread and wall foundations;
• Reinforcing bars and concrete placement for tilt-up walls;
• Reinforcing bars and concrete placement for slab on ground;
• Precast hollow core slab system on the second floor;
• Steel bar joist and welding connections on the roof framing;
• Custom long-span steel truss girder supporting roof framing over the apparatus bay;
• Metal roof deck attachment;
• Light gage truss installation and connections over the apparatus bay and roof overhangs; and
• Testing moisture content of the interior wall insulation due to water intrusion from heavy rain during construction.
