Savannah’s downtown area includes the Historic District, the largest registered National Historic Landmark District in the United States. Building a parking structure in the historic district mandated a design that was architecturally sensitive to its surroundings while providing much-needed parking for area businesses and tourism.
This 497-space seven-level parking structure features a brick veneer and precast concrete façade to meet historic district requirements. Office and retail space, in addition to the city of Savannah Parking Services, is located on the ground level. The parking structure was designed to accommodate a future horizontal expansion.
The project received the following awards:
• Award of Excellence in Parking Design from the International Parking Institute
• Best Parking Structure Award from the Precast Concrete Institute
• First Place Award for Public Works/Buildings from the American Concrete Institute (Georgia Chapter)
• One-way traffic flow in a double-thread helix
• Glass-enclosed stair and elevator towers, closed-circuit television, and audio monitoring to enhance security
