Henry Ford Hospital is a large urban medical center in downtown Detroit. The GSPS/Staff Parking Structures are adjacent facilities and provide separate parking for visitors and staff. The structures were built in the early 1960s, utilizing conventionally reinforced, cast-in-place concrete, short-span construction. The structures contain over 650,000 square feet of parking area, providing parking for approximately 2,000 vehicles. Due to years of exposure to the Midwest climate, the structures exhibited significant corrosion deterioration and significant water leaking into the occupied kitchen/patient areas below.Â
WGI completed a structural evaluation and repair-options analysis summarizing various repair and protection options available. Repair options included conventional patching, strip patching, bonded concrete overlay, structural steel reinforcement, and slab replacement. Protection options included sealers, traffic-bearing membranes, protected membranes, and cathodic protection. Options analysis included a life-cycle cost analysis presentation to compare various options on a present-worth basis.Â
WGI completed construction documents, assisted with contractor bidding, and provided construction administration services, including on-site observation. Repairs to the facilities were completed while maintaining all hospital operations and maintaining a minimum of 75% of the parking throughout the repairs.Â
