Lowe’s Home Improvement represents a creative solution to locating the familiar home improvement store into a high-density urban area. Located in Charlotte’s historic South End district, land values and development guidelines prohibited using large surface lots to accommodate the parking demand. The solution was to include rooftop parking in addition to a small amount of ground-level parking on site. The design involves a very sophisticated waterproofing system to ensure a 100 percent water-tight roof, including a garden area to buffer the store and adjacent housing development.
WGI served as the parking consultant for the rooftop parking area and the structural engineer for the entire Lowe’s Home Improvement building and adjacent outdoor living center.

• Bituminous sheet waterproofing system below a concrete wearing course
• High-strength steel frame with a composite concrete roof slab
• Small area of ground-level parking on site
