Due to hospital services’ growth and the existing parking structure reaching the end of its useful life, a phased parking replacement program was implemented at Spectrum Health’s Blodgett campus. WGI completed functional design and structural engineering services for the new North Parking Structure. Following the North Parking Structure construction, the existing parking structure located at the south end of the hospital campus will be demolished and replaced with a new South Parking Structure.
The cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structure has 566 parking spaces on three levels, two of which are below grade. It provides parking for hospital visitors utilizing either self-park or valet parking options and a nested parking area for employees. Context-sensitive design elements included limiting the massing to one story above grade, architectural precast facade panels with thin brick and integral color, and extensive landscaping as a buffer between the parking structure and the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The structure location and footprint accommodated site boundary constraints and allowed for the preservation of existing landscaping elements. The structure is designed for future vertical expansion housing a medical office building or additional levels of parking.
