450 Federal Street Parking Facility

Client:
U.S. General Services Administration
Market:
Parking
Location:
Chicago, Illinois

Project Details

Constructed in 1973, the Federal Street Parking Facility consists of eight supported parking levels and an on-grade basement level. The structure functions as a three-bay split-level with express ramps between levels and parking for 840 vehicles. Pedestrian access to the facility is provided by two elevators and two stair towers. The facility is constructed of conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned, cast-in-place concrete with barrier strands and bumper guards around the perimeter.

As part of the ongoing maintenance program, WGI completed a comprehensive structural analysis of the parking facility, prepared a report of observations and recommendations, and developed a repair program. In general, the facility was found in good condition for its age; however, deficiencies observed in the facility included:

  • Limited chloride-induced delamination in the concrete floors and ceilings
  • Evidence of corrosion, delamination, and cracking in beams
  • Wearing of the traffic-bearing membrane at the top and bottom of the ramps
  • Damaged and loose pedestrian guardrails in many locations
  • Vehicle and pedestrian guards do not meet the current code’s structural capacity or fall protection
  • Moderate-to-severe corrosion of steel base plates, guards, ductwork, door frames, and covers
  • Corroded and cracked drains and piping

The structure’s repair and preventive maintenance program included repairing the deteriorated items noted during the field survey. Also, fall protection systems throughout the facility were addressed, bringing the parking structure into compliance with current code requirements.
