WGI completed analysis and limited materials testing of the vaulted sidewalk at 610 South Canal to provide a condition assessment and estimate of the structure’s remaining service life. WGI personnel reviewed the structural system, including cast-in-place concrete slabs, beams, and columns. Materials testing included soundings and chloride-ion content of the sidewalk slab.
Generally, the sidewalk and vault were in poor condition and, without significant repairs, had a remaining service life of fewer than five years. The materials testing returned chloride-ion content in the concrete well beyond the threshold required for ongoing corrosion.
Observed deterioration included:
- Approximately 55% of the slab exhibited top surface corrosion-induced delamination, with concentrations near the tooled joints and expansion joint at the plaza entrance to 610 South Canal
- Approximately 45% of the vault’s concrete ceiling was delaminated, primarily along the bottom reinforcing steel and the numerous full-depth cracks in the slab
- Extensive corrosion and spalling along the concrete beams and columns
- Localized spalls (e.g., potholes) that presented a tripping hazard for pedestrians
Immediate repairs were recommended, consisting of complete removal and replacement of the sidewalk system.
