WGI designed two 40-foot wide by 22-foot long single-span bridges with 20- foot long approach slabs in the City of Vero Beach. Both bridges are located in the Intracoastal Waterway north of the 17th Street Bridge and provide a single point of access between the A1A Highway and more than 40 residences situated on the two islands. The replacement and widening of the existing bridges were completed using phased construction that maintained at least one lane of vehicle traffic across the bridges at all times while also maintaining utility services to the islands during the bridges’ replacement without service interruption.
The bridges were both constructed utilizing prestressed concrete piles, concrete pile caps, and prestressed concrete deck units that were transversely post-tensioned. The bridges feature decorative concrete pilasters and concrete barrier walls with inlaid detailing. The bridges also include concrete utility shelves located outside of the bridge barriers.
WGI staff provided structural design services and construction administration services. Design services included preparation of construction design plans, signed and sealed design calculations, preparation of an engineer’s cost estimate, and oversight of the permit application process. Construction services included observation of the concrete prestressing, reinforcement, and concrete placement. Field and prestressed yard observations were completed throughout construction so that final certification could be provided.
