Due to trapped pockets of hydrogen sulfide gas in one of the City’s primary forcemain lines, WGI quickly mobilized field crews to work with Pure Technologies and assist with monitoring of a SmartBall (a free-swimming inspection platform). WGI’s role included accurate horizontal location (Quality Level B) of existing underground forcemain at key locations throughout the City (13+ miles of forcemain). Test holes were carefully performed (Quality Level A) to verify location and assist with installation of sensors used in conjunction with the SmartBall. This effort allowed for a better understanding of the current condition of the interior of the forcemain and was instrumental in allowing the City to determine the areas where the forcemain will require repairs or upgrades in the future.
