The City of Aspen’s Rio Grande (Galena) Plaza, located above the Parking Garage, needed restoration repairs and a new plaza to visually connect nearby Main Street to the lower-level city park. The plaza system consists of pavers, planters, and landscaping that experienced significant weathering and frost deterioration, reducing its aesthetic appeal. The City plans to completely replace the plaza with a new waterproofing and surfacing upgrade to promote and support goals outlined in the City’s Master Plan. 

WGI provided an evaluation of the plaza area and preliminary design services to waterproof the deck roof and restore the plaza to improve the aesthetic appearance and function. Recommended repairs included: 

• Repair of damaged areas of the underlying structural floor slab supporting the plaza. 
• Replace protective waterproofing materials at the elevated plaza tier 
• Renovation and possible reconfiguration of the supporting plaza, including design components, drains, and lighting
