The Detroit Metropolitan Airport Blue Deck Parking Structure, fondly known as “Big Blue” to its WGI engineering team, provides 5,500 parking spaces to patrons of the airport. The structure was constructed with a pretopped precast concrete structural system. The structure exhibited shear wall damage, failures of flange connectors and expansion joint systems, premature deterioration of the tee surfaces, drainage basins, and numerous joint sealants. The extent of the damage was widespread.
WGI’s team of Restoration Specialists diagnosed the deterioration mechanisms and developed a multi-year repair and maintenance program to extend the life of the structure. Construction is currently concluding on Phase 1 of the project and includes:
