The City of Pahokee enlisted WGI to analyze the existing pavement and subgrade conditions and propose design sections for this aging roadway in this busy residential, commercial, and municipal roadway corridor. The 50-foot right-of-way design included two 12-foot travel lanes, two 4-foot bike lanes, two 5-foot sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveway turnouts for all existing driveways, stormwater system, pavement markings, signs, and adjustments to a 12-inch water main.
Historical experience and geotechnical evaluation confirmed a thick underlying muck layer. Removing muck down to a layer of suitable subgrade was considered, but the inherent constraints prompted the evaluation of alternatives. Flexible pavement design alternatives included thicker base, subgrade layers, and base material reinforced with geosynthetic fabrics. WGI’s services included surveying, design, permitting, and bidding assistance.
• This project was adjacent to Pahokee Elementary School. The design and construction considered the students’ testing schedules and bus and parent pickup and drop-off access issues.
• This project was funded through the Florida Department of Transportation’s Specific Appropriation for Rural Areas of Opportunity (SCOPP) Funding Program.
