As part of an $800M transportation enhancement project for the Florida Department of Transportation, WGI provided the master planning and construction documents for a 44-acre urban park redevelopment in downtown Miami. The urban park re-established a connection from the historic community of Overtown to the Bay, which the original creation of the I-395 expressway severed. The urban park also provided connections to various destination points adjacent to the project, including the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts, the Harn Museum of Art, and the Frost Museum of Science.Â
The proposed park elements centered around a continuous 1.5-mile multi-use path providing users safe access from Overtown to the Bay. The park elements included a community garden, a children’s play zone, interactive splash fountains, music chamber with performance stages, dog parks, open play fields, multi-use play fields, educational signage, and art installations. WGI received a near perfect aesthetic score from the Aesthetic Review Committee, comprised of major stakeholders including the Arsht Center, the City of Miami, and Miami-Dade County.Â
