WGI, in collaboration with the Kansas City Aviation Department (KCAD) and Kansas City International Airport (KCA), provided parking planning, design, and consulting services for this AIA award-winning project. As part of the “Build KCI” initiative, the new art-forward 40-gate, 1.1-million-square-foot terminal and 6,219-space parking facility are noted for ease of use and human-centric design. The terminal facility and garage were delivered design-build and received LEED Gold certification.
WGI analyzed the airport’s parking and enplanement data to build a customized parking utilization model to forecast demand at strategic milestones. Working with the airport, WGI reviewed different operating scenarios and recommended strategies and technologies to improve operations, enhance the customer parking experience, accommodate ridesharing (Uber, Lyft, etc.), and future-proof for autonomous vehicles. Using our FlexPark™ strategy, the garage incorporates multiple ingress and egress portals, strategic ramp locations, column grid spacing for future ConRAC operations, and a mezzanine with adaptive-reuse capabilities. To improve the passenger’s journey, we integrated commercial lanes for arrivals and departures, curb management of TNCs, and valet operations into the garage footprint.
