The terminal at the Newark International Airport is the former parking garage serving Terminal C. The structure is cast-in-place concrete with conventionally reinforced columns, beams, and slabs. Structural restoration was needed as the columns did not comply with current seismic strength requirements.
The former parking structure was converted into baggage-handling areas as part of the Global Gateway terminal expansion project. The existing rectangular columns did not satisfy seismic requirements after the recent seismic zone reclassification; WGI prepared calculations and drawings for Fiber Reinforced Polymer strengthening and provided construction monitoring services.
