Sebastian Inlet Rehabilitation - Phase 1

Client:
Sebastian Inlet District
Market:
Water & Environment, Marine & Coastal
Location:
Sebastian, Florida

Project Details

WGI was retained by the Sebastian Inlet District (District) to develop design and construction documents for the structural rehabilitation of the north jetty based on recommendations from WGI’s prior assessments that identified notable deterioration. During early stages of the project, storm events caused large voids to undermine the walkway requiring an emergency closure and temporary repairs to be performed. Damaged to the temporary repairs prompted the District to pursue a full replacement of the walkway leading up to the jetty to provide for long term stability at the site. Given the immediate safety issues and the increased scope associated with replacing the sidewalk, the District separated the previous rehabilitation efforts into multiple phases to align with available funding.

The first phase focused on replacing and strengthening the undermined walkway leading to the north jetty. The work included the design of a dual steel sheet pile wall with a reinforced concrete cap and fascia to serve as the new walkway structure. WGI coordinated the walkway design with Environmental Science Associates (ESA) to include placement of marine mattress and armor stones in order to dissipate wave energy and protect the new system.

The second and third phase will address the remaining structural rehabilitation of the north jetty, including concrete restoration, widening and stabilization of the elevated walkway, replacement of an elevated walkway transition zone between the walkway and the jetty proper, railing improvements, and replacement of displaced or eroded armor stone.

Project Highlights:

Emergency repairs required close coordinate between Owner, Contractor, and Engineer to get the pier reopened for the public.
