The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) engaged WGI to compute the volume of numerous debris stockpiles at the SWA facility. Using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technologies, WGI accomplished this task for a total volume of 9,584 cubic yards in a 3-hour flight time. This includes the establishment of on-ground control to collect and process the stockpile volumes accurately. Several of the piles were manually cross-sectioned to vet the UAS data accuracy. The difference between the manual cross-sections and UAS data collection was 1%. Conventional survey methods would have taken approximately two days of field and office processing. The UAS data collection and processing took 7 hours, providing the SWA with the benefit of time and cost savings for the project.
