Florida’s Turnpike Mainline (SR 91) from the Turnpike Extension (SR 821) to Johnson Street is a heavily trafficked section of Florida’s Turnpike between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The roadway is a primary interstate connector serving South Florida commuters and visitors. The highway is being expanded from six to ten lanes with express lanes to serve the Turnpike’s regular customers to effectively connect these two metropolitan centers. The peak traffic flows for visitors going to Hard Rock Stadium. The project has capacity improvements and implementation of tolled lanes. WGI performed required data collection and production of a 3D roadway corridor model, including adjacent properties, highly accurate right-of-way maps, and acquisition of all in-situ data to facilitate the design and construction.
Complex challenges on the job involved safely working inside the corridor while collecting data, the project’s many technical requirements and deliverables, and a significantly compressed schedule. WGI leveraged multiple data collection technologies, including ground-based LiDAR (mobile, backpack, and static), repeated deployments of a small drone vessel for performing multi-beam hydrographic surveys, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for conducting underground utility location and designations, vacuum excavation equipment for verification of subsurface utility locations, static GNSS observations (geodetic control for the project), and other surveying services for successful on-time delivery of the project.
