Vulnerability Assessment - Coconut Creek FL

This climate vulnerability assessment evaluated the City of Coconut Creek’s potential exposure, impacts, and risks to climate change. The targets of this study were extreme heat, sea level rise, and flooding and how these affect city assets such as infrastructure, natural resources, and the economy. The outcome of this study identified City assets that may be vulnerable to climate change and priority projects that may prevent or mitigate impacts to those vulnerable assets. WGI worked across agencies and jurisdictions to gather the large amount of GIS data needed to complete the study, successfully engaging with the City’s GIS Department, Broward County’s Resilient Environment Department, and Cocomar Water Management District.  

The study comes at an opportune moment for the City, as many other peer municipalities have authored similar studies, and the funding pool for resilience, adaptation, and mitigation projects is increasing. A Resilient Florida state grant funded the study, and a key component of the study was to ensure that all state grant requirements were fully met to qualify for the funding. The project also included a robust public and stakeholder outreach component, which included the creation of a steering committee to guide the process and presentation of the project during different phases at public meetings.
