2017 FTBA Best in Construction Awards

WGI is pleased to announce it received recognition from the Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) in its 2017 Best in Construction Awards in the following categories: INTERSTATE: I-75 Widening from Sumter County Line to CR 470, Sumter County/Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 5. As designer, WGI partnered with contractor Middlesex Corporation for this 13.3-mile long Design-Build interstate project. It included design enhancements and innovative solutions to widen I-75 (SR 93) from four lanes to six lanes, with consideration for future eight- and ten-lane widening, a complete interchange design and reconstruction at SR 48, reconstruction of SR 48 to a five-lane urban section with a bi-directional center turn lane, replacement of I-75 bridges at SR 48 with two-phase construction, correction of substandard vertical curves and improvements to drainage, lighting, milling, and resurfacing. The project was completed ahead of schedule, received a score of 4.72/5 from FDOT Partnering Surveys, high marks from local agencies, and saved District 5 over $3M. DESIGN-BUILD: SR 710 – Beeline Highway Reconstruct, Palm Beach County/FDOT District 4. The Design-Build Team of Ranger Construction and WGI reconstructed SR 710 (the Beeline Highway) from its pre-existing, undivided two-lane configuration to a divided four-lane configuration. The project reconstructed the Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) roadway from Pratt Whitney Road to the Martin/Palm Beach County line, for a length of approximately six miles. SR 710 is the primary connector between the Port of Palm Beach and manufacturing and distribution points in Central Florida. ALTERNATIVE CONTRACTING: I-75 Capacity Improvement Project, from SR 951 to Golden Gate Parkway, Collier County/FDOT District 1. WGI served as the noise wall specialty engineer for a Cost Savings Initiative Proposal (CSIP) that resulted in $1M total savings. The CSIP focused on modifications to the size and number of foundations constructed in hard limestone cap rock for over 18,000 linear feet of noise wall. These modifications helped the contractor complete the project five months ahead of schedule, earning a $1.3M early completion bonus.
