Nestled in the heart of the Marina Historic District, City Marina in Delray Beach, Florida, has long been an essential part of the city's waterfront charm. In this project spotlight, we take a closer look at the recent improvements made to the City Marina, which enhanced not only its beauty but also its functionality, safety, and overall appeal.

The project, aimed at improving the City of Delray Beach Marina, called for the involvement of multiple WGI disciplines, including civil, mechanical, and structural engineering, as well as landscape architecture & public outreach. Thanks to our team's collaborative and dedicated efforts, the City of Delray Beach Marina underwent a significant transformation, offering improved public accessibility, enhanced infrastructure, and environmental benefits.

An Award-Winning Transformation for the City of Delray Beach Marina

Having recently undergone extensive renovations by WGI, the City Marina has emerged better than ever, earning the prestigious 2021 APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award | Projects Less Than 5M | Structures. This success can be attributed to the comprehensive range of improvements that were made, which include:

• A state-of-the-art floating dock system
• Upgraded water service
• Individual and publicly accessible vacuum sewer pump-out stations
• Electrical upgrades and communications services
• ADA accessible walkways
• Security fencing
• Signage and striping upgrades

Overcoming Challenges: Combining Technology and Community Outreach

WGI faced numerous challenges during the renovation process but deftly utilized technology and community collaboration to overcome them. One innovative solution involved using jet grouting technology for soil enhancement.  To combat the historically relentless sea level rise, WGI designed a below-grade pump station and reconfigured the existing drainage system to accommodate drainage during construction and thereafter.

Recognizing the potential inconvenience the project could cause to local businesses and residents, WGI implemented a public involvement plan (PIP) that brought together stakeholders, business owners, community leaders, residents, and other users. This collaboration ensured a strong sense of community engagement throughout the project.
