Originally developed in the 1990s, Gulf Coast Town Center is a mixed-use retail and entertainment shopping center located on approximately 80 acres in Fort Myers, Florida. The property is located north of Florida Gulf Coast University and is at the epicenter of Southwest Florida’s main growth corridor, featuring many of the nation’s top retailers and restaurateurs.
When the project’s owner was looking for a consultant to help design extensive outdoor upgrades to the center, they turned to WGI. We worked closely with the client to develop creative strategies to help breathe new life into the development and attract locals and visitors to the site.
Throughout the site, common areas and underutilized spaces were transformed into experiential gathering spaces and interactive features. Water features, shade trellises, lighting features, seating, and beautiful new landscaping make the area feel more like a park than a shopping center.
At the Center Roundabout, the primary focal point for the center, WGI designed a dynamic and colorful sculpture that features an interactive misting system. It is surrounded by lush landscaping, water features, and plenty of seating options. Check out how our design concept turned into reality:
This project is another great example of how our multidisciplinary approach can benefit clients by being a “one stop shop.” We provided planning, environmental, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and structural engineering services for the project. We also served as the owner’s local expert, helping to navigate the project through the Lee County entitlements and permitting process.
