North Carolina’s growth is accelerating, and with it comes the need for transportation projects containing safer intersections, reliable overpasses, and modern interchanges that move people and freight efficiently.
WGI has built a specialized practice in the North Carolina region focused on transportation and parking solutions, overpass, interchange, and intersection design. Our approach blends rigorous engineering with practical constructability, meaningful community engagement, and clear delivery pathways so owners can move confidently from concept to letting.
At WGI, we’re also proud to partner with NCDOT Business Units and Divisions, municipalities, and regional agencies to solve high-stakes mobility challenges.
From compact urban roundabouts to high-speed interchanges and rail grade separations, our team delivers solutions that fit the surrounding context, perform on day one, and hold up over decades of service.

Adding Value to Your Next Project
We begin by matching the solution to the setting – Safety targets, operations, heavy vehicle movements, emergency access, and comfort for people walking or biking all factor into the concept. Calibrated models, sight distance reviews, and design vehicle paths confirm that the preferred alternative fits the context and performs under real conditions.
Constructability is built in from the start – 3D corridor and bridge modeling help us spot conflicts, plan practical staging, and keep traffic moving during construction. Utilities, drainage, and right of way are coordinated early, so reviews and permits progress without surprises.
Cost and schedule stay predictable – Quantity-based estimates are updated at milestones, and focused risk reviews address the few items that drive most of the cost. We tailor technical provisions and packaging for design-bid-build or alternative delivery methods to reduce ambiguity for bidders and contractors.
Long-term performance and community trust are designed together – Materials and details are selected for durability and ease of maintenance, with drainage and foundations sized for current and future conditions. Clear visuals and plain language outreach keep stakeholders informed and supportive. Disciplined QA and QC, including clash detection and independent checks, verify quality and safety before plans reach the field.
North Carolina Project Spotlights
Asheboro Bypass, Randolph County
Background: This 14.6-mile four-lane facility, with an additional two-lane segment near the Zoo entrance, is a design-build project that reshaped regional mobility around Asheboro. WGI designed three bridge sites and multiple culverts, including a flyover with modified bulb tee girders and dual one-span bridges on a curved alignment over NC 49, creating reliable connections while controlling costs and construction impacts.
I-85 Widening Improvements, Rowan County
Background: By reconstructing and widening roughly 5.9 miles of I-85 to an eight-lane divided facility, this design-build effort relieved a critical freight and commuter bottleneck. WGI designed the three-span US 29 bridge over the Norfolk Southern and North Carolina Railroad on a curved alignment with 63-inch prestressed girders and steel-pile foundations, balancing capacity gains with long-term durability.
Greensboro Eastern Loop, I-840, Guilford County
Background: As part of the Greensboro Eastern Loop, WGI designed two bridge sites: the Lake Jeanette Road overpass and a crossing over North Elm Street. Each structure pairs context-appropriate curvature with modified bulb-tee prestressed concrete girders, using MSE-backed abutments and steel-pile foundations to speed delivery and ensure long-term performance. The result is safer movements and more reliable travel times on a corridor built to support regional growth.
Interchange Improvements at I-40/I-85 and Mebane Oaks Road, Alamance County
Background: To unlock added capacity at a busy interchange, WGI widened both sides of the existing bridge by 35 feet using four simple spans with steel plate girders. End bents on steel H-piles and interior bents on concrete columns with drilled piers supported a staged approach that kept traffic moving while the structure expanded to meet demand.
Rehobeth Church Road over US 29/70/I-85 Business, Guilford County
Background: Serving as the prime designer, WGI delivered a staged two-span bridge replacement with approach widening that improves safety and everyday reliability over a major corridor. The superstructure uses 54-inch AASHTO Type IV prestressed girders, with end bents on piles and drilled-shaft interior bents for strength and maintainability.
