Grand Bahama International Airport (GBIA) is on the brink of an exciting transformation that will redefine how airports connect communities, inspire travelers, and fuel economic prosperity. Through a forward-thinking visioning and master planning process, WGI helped lay the foundation for a next-generation facility that not only meets the demands of modern aviation but also reflects the culture, resilience, and spirit of Grand Bahama Island.
This redevelopment is more than just an infrastructure upgrade—it represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a transportation hub that doubles as a welcoming gateway, leaving visitors with a lasting impression of the island before they even step beyond the terminal doors.
A Catalyst for Grand Bahama’s Future
Located in Freeport, GBIA has long been a lifeline for the island, driving tourism, facilitating trade, and serving as a vital link to global markets. In recent years, the airport’s importance has only grown as international travel has surged, tourism has rebounded, and the community has faced the harsh realities of hurricane impacts.

In response, the Bahamian government committed to reimagining the airport as a modern, resilient aviation hub designed to support the island’s long-term growth. The new master plan is focused on:
- Expanding passenger and cargo capacity to meet future demand
- Improving operational efficiency while strengthening resilience to environmental challenges
- Delivering a world-class passenger experience that celebrates Bahamian culture
- Catalyzing economic growth by reinforcing the island’s role in tourism, logistics, and trade
Once complete, the airport will stand as a cornerstone of Grand Bahama’s revitalization, fueling industries across hospitality, retail, and transportation while offering visitors a memorable introduction to the island.
WGI’s Role: Shaping a Bold Vision
WGI was honored to serve as a trusted partner on this transformative initiative, providing architecture, master planning, programming, and digital services to bring GBIA’s future to life. Our multidisciplinary team worked hand-in-hand with government leaders, airlines, airport staff, and community representatives to ensure the design addressed both the technical demands of modern aviation and the aspirations of those who depend on the airport every day.
Our contributions included:
- Visioning & Stakeholder Engagement – Hosting workshops, focus groups, and community sessions to define priorities around passenger experience, cultural identity, sustainability, and growth.
- Programming – Outlining spatial and operational requirements for terminals, customs, concessions, baggage handling, VIP lounges, and support facilities.
- Master Planning & Design – Developing layouts and site concepts that balance function, aesthetics, and resilience, while integrating sustainable strategies such as natural ventilation, renewable energy, and climate-adapted materials.
- Digital Visualization – Producing immersive 3D renderings and virtual tours to communicate the design vision, secure stakeholder support, and generate excitement.
This level of collaboration and creative freedom made the project especially meaningful for our team. As architect Sierra Eades reflected:
“The amazing opportunity we had to vision a transformative aviation project like this from scratch was a one-of-a-kind experience. We are excited to leverage this project’s successes as we further engage the aviation and transportation markets. Designing these facilities are cornerstones for setting WGI apart as a world-class architectural studio.”
Designing for Resilience, Culture, and Connection
A defining element of the redevelopment is its deep connection to place. The design framework draws inspiration from Grand Bahama’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, incorporating local materials, art, and architectural elements throughout the airport experience. The result is more than just a terminal—it’s a cultural ambassador that celebrates the island’s identity for millions of travelers.
At the same time, resilience is at the heart of the project. The design embraces sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency, and ensure long-term adaptability. From hurricane-resistant infrastructure to energy-conscious systems, GBIA is being built to thrive under both everyday operations and extraordinary conditions.
A Gateway to Progress and Possibility
The redevelopment of Grand Bahama International Airport is far more than an infrastructure project—it is a symbol of progress, pride, and possibility. By blending world-class design with cultural authenticity and climate resilience, this airport will not only redefine how travelers experience the island but also solidify Grand Bahama’s position as a vibrant hub in the Caribbean.
At WGI, we are proud to have played a role in shaping this transformative vision. With every project, we remain committed to connecting people, places, and opportunities through design that inspires and endures.
