Abbey Delray

Client:
Lifespace Communities
Market:
Development, Hospitality & Resorts, Residential, Senior Living
Location:
Delray Beach, Florida

Project Details

Abbey Delray underwent a multimillion-dollar makeover to modernize and expand their existing Delray Beach independent and assisted living facility. WGI provided Planning, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Survey services for the project. The existing facility was expanded by 52 assisted living beds and 30 memory care beds. This also included a new clubhouse, expanded dining venues, new auditorium space, fitness and aerobic facilities, salon, and spa. The existing butterfly garden, a favorite area of the residents, was removed during the renovation, and in its place a new garden was created with larval and nectar sources for butterflies and other pollinators. The existing pool deck was expanded to accommodate additional lounge areas as well as a covered pergola which provides shade during yoga and outdoor fitness classes. The memory care wing was designed around a therapeutic garden courtyard with plant material that focuses on color, texture, and fragrance for the wellness of the residents.

It was important that the design of the building was sensitive to the existing built environment. The architecture provided more density at the community core by attaching to the existing clubhouse and dining building and embracing the pool. Great care was taken between the planning and landscape architectural team to strengthen and expand the residential pedestrian corridors on campus. The building forms are arranged carefully to expound on the courtyards and pocket garden language on campus. Building forms are staggered to allow light to penetrate these intimate spaces and maintain view angles within the community
