City of Lighthouse Point Code Rewrite

WGI worked with the City of Lighthouse Point, Florida, to undertake a complete review, and where applicable, rewrite of the City’s municipal code. The team executed a full strike-and-underline of all chapters in the City code. Also, WGI created a broad set of graphics to integrate into the code for easy interpretation.

The project approach emphasized a thorough and careful examination of the code with thoughtful coordination with the City’s staff, citizens, key stakeholders, and the governing body. Inconsistencies, conflicts, and obsolete provisions were identified. Confusing verbiage and technical jargon in the code was replaced with clear and concise language. We replaced long texts and consolidated them under a Use Matrix, identifying types of uses in each district and associated approval processes. To further assist the reader in interpreting the City’s code, new tables and visual illustrations were supplemented throughout. WGI created a set of additions and revisions focused on best practices and reviewed them with key stakeholders to review and refine.

The WGI team also worked with the City staff to organize their development application process by creating a hierarchy of applications and explaining the process from the initial submittal to final approval. The team updated all administrative procedures in the code for efficiency and produced step-by-step workflow charts to depict the common processes.
