WGI worked with the City of Fernandina Beach and their residents to answer the question, “what do you hope Fernandina Beach will be 25 years from now?” Extensive outreach with residents, stakeholders, and city leadership identified resiliency, sustainability, and preservation as the overarching themes of their vision; the plan identifies goals, objectives, and implementation strategies to support those themes. The WGI team drafted a plan to balance new development with environmental conservation, welcome new citizens while preserving its small-town culture, and protect long-term residents from gentrification. The draft Vision 2045 also considers new technology and the COVID-19 pandemic, which revolutionized the economic landscape, leading to a rise of remote working, athome businesses, and changed migration patterns.
Vision 2045 will be a roadmap for the City to address issues, identify opportunities, and protect the future of its community. The plan will be the guideline for updating the City’s Land Development Code (LDC), Comprehensive Plan, Capital Improvements Program (CIP), and future planning studies.
