Highwoods Preserve Parkway at Highwoods Palm Way Roundabout

WGI is nearing the final stages of design for this new roundabout in northeast Tampa. This intersection at Highwoods Preserve Parkway and Highwoods Palm Way experiences heavy congestion during peak-hour traffic and has a nonstandard unsignalized northbound dual-left turn. Converting this intersection into a roundabout will improve traffic operations and efficiency at all times of the day.  

Challenges:

• Northbound dual-left turn lane at an unsignalized intersection creates confusion and congestion for drivers
• An unsignalized crosswalk on the northern leg of the intersection lacks median pedestrian refuge and requires pedestrians to cross the entire roadway in one movement
• Constrained right-of-way for the geometric improvements

Solutions:

• The roundabout design provides a safe and efficient dual-left turn movement, while also alleviating AM peak-hour congestion
• The roundabout design allows for shorter pedestrian crossings across Highwoods Preserve Parkway, which provides for safer pedestrian connectivity through the intersection
• Minor design modifications, such as a sidewalk adjacent to the curb, were included to mitigate right-of-way impacts
• WGI employed operational analysis and scenario planning to create a design that will work under multi-modal growth scenarios
