As part of an initiative to support the transition to sustainable transportation, WGI was engaged by the Hillsborough County School District to provide electrical engineering expertise for the district’s first fleet of all-electric school buses. The project entails the installation of 14 high-capacity Level 3 120 kW charging stations to support a fleet of 28 electric buses.
The project involved coordination with multiple teams such as the School District, bus manufacturers, and civil engineers. WGI played a central role in organizing efforts to design and configure the layout for parking and charging stations, ensuring efficient access and optimized space utilization. The complexity of the project was further heightened by the need for in-depth research into the compatibility of charging systems with the School District’s primary bus providers: Blue Bird, Thomas, and IC Navistar.
To meet project timelines, WGI engineered an early-release package for the new 3000-amp, 480-volt, 3-phase main switchboard, ensuring its timely delivery to align with the arrival of the buses and the completion of the charging infrastructure. WGI also incorporated solar-powered luminaires to illuminate the charging station islands, reinforcing the District’s commitment to green energy solutions.
