Midcon Pedestrian Bridge Restoration

The ten-year-old post-tensioned structural slab system experienced premature failure of the wearing surface due to poor subsurface drainage and inadequate isolation and expansion joints. Improper jointing also resulted in the failure of the precast concrete wall panel connections, which was of major structural concern.

A new system was designed to alleviate drainage problems and wear surface durability issues. New isolation joints and insulation layers were installed to allow adequate freedom of movement to mitigate cracking and thermal expansion issues. The new system included a structural perimeter curb with new anchorages for the existing precast façade panels to replace failed connectors. The retail spaces below were open during all phases of the work.
