Palm Beach Zoo contacted WGI to create a unique, yet harmonious habitat for the American black bear brothers, Lewis and Clark. Thorough research, careful thought and close interaction with their zookeepers was crucial in creating a home for the bears to accept and guests to enjoy for years to come.Â
Black bear food preferences, hibernation, denning behaviors, as well as stages of activity were studied and included in the design concept. Native trees such as Sea Grapes and Sabal Palms provide shade and Saw Palmetto create dens below. Native, edible plant species such as Love Grass, Wine Grass and Gamma Grass were placed accordingly to provide food. Artificial trees that hold fruit overhead and wobble were provided to simulate their natural tree shaking feeding behaviors. With this interactive feature, these ingenious food hunting creatures will provide much viewing pleasure for zoo guests.Â
WGI used recycled materials where possible in all design elements. Reusable logs were incorporated for their climbing activities and recycled culverts made great dens for rest and hibernation. Culverts were draped with reusable logs and stones. Considering they can sleep plentifully, often near water, a small stream was provided for cooling.Â
Through elements of water, native vegetation, and recycled materials, these brother bears will be sure to have a comfy place to rest, yummy natural foods to eat, and spaces to play. Through the collaboration of the design team and Palm Beach Zoo, the generous donation afforded Lewis and Clark a territory in South Florida to be American black bears.
