State Road (SR) 60 Pedestrian Overpass

Client:
Florida Department of Transportation - District 7
Market:
Transportation, Support Facilities
Location:
Clearwater, FL

Project Details

WGI was tasked to design an engaging and architecturally significant pedestrian overpass for enhanced pedestrian mobility and safety between the Courtney Campbell Causeway and Bayshore Trails. The project also serves as the primary gateway and brand marker for those traveling along SR 60, the major thoroughfare between Hillsborough County and the City of Clearwater and its top-rated beaches. WGI managed the stakeholder engagement efforts and was responsible for overall delivery of the signature design. WGI coordinated architectural design concepts with all project stakeholders, including those with the City and FDOT, to build consensus and generate positive energy toward a preferred design concept. The preferred design concept of “Fish” was unanimously selected and WGI proceeded with the design and detailing of the architectural enhancements as such.

The architectural enhancements were ultimately coordinated for application among standard FDOT bridge superstructure components resulting in a cohesive design solution that complements the bridge structure, elevates pedestrian mobility across a major roadway, increases safety for pedestrians and motorists alike, and promotes brand identity as desired by the City. This project including architectural enhancements was realized through an interagency funding and maintenance agreement between the City and FDOT.

WGI created electrical lighting construction documents for the design of a pedestrian bridge with a comprehensive design and implementation process to ensure safety, visibility, and aesthetic appeal. This scope of work involves evaluating the bridge’s unique architectural and environmental characteristics, determining the ideal placement of lighting fixtures, selecting appropriate fixture types, specifying electrical connections, and establishing a control system. The plan also considers energy efficiency, sustainability, and compliance with relevant codes and regulations to create a well-lit, visually striking, and secure passage for pedestrians and bicycles, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics for users of the bridge.

Project Highlights:

  • Signature Architectural Design
  • BIM to Fabrication
  • 3D Printing and Wind Tunnel Tested
  • Mobility and Safety Enhancement
  • Unique lighting design

Project Cost $14,350,000.00
