The 10th Annual Engineering BBQ Cook-Off at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) fired up on Saturday, October 26th, and served as a delicious showdown to remember!
Organized by UTSA’s spirited engineering students—from groups like the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Engineering Without Borders (EWB), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)—the event united engineering buffs, BBQ fanatics, and the San Antonio community for a day of smoky flavors and friendly competition. WGI was proud to join in the fun as a Silver Sponsor, celebrating our San Antonio team’s community spirit and culinary chops!
Beyond the BBQ, this cook-off serves as a major fundraiser for UTSA’s engineering organizations, giving students the chance to raise money to support their educational goals.
From mechanical and chemical engineers to future civil and transportation experts, each group brought their A-game for a weekend of sizzling success!
With Edgar Segovia as our Grill Master (alongside his father, Joe, a clear BBQ legend in his own right), the WGI SATX team wowed the crowd with some next-level smoked queso—our secret weapon this year! Served with chips and topped with brisket by popular demand, our queso quickly became a fan favorite.
Joining Edgar on the scene were Christopher Velasquez, Erin Sandoval, Jorge Velez, Jeremy Doege, Zephan Champion, Nina Fuentes, Sarah Hinojosa, and Aiden Moran, who all pitched in to keep the flavors flowing.
While we didn’t bring home trophies in brisket, chicken, or ribs this time around, our queso and community spirit stole the show…. And, in a bonus win, Jeremy snagged the cornhole championship title, proving that our competitive edge goes well beyond the grill!
In true WGI fashion, we made sure this event included something for everyone, including the next generation of engineers—Although not stationed at our booth, WGI’s Ravali Kosaraju took the lead at the STEM booth, organizing hands-on activities for kids.
Inspiring the next generation to love engineering is a big part of who we are, and seeing local youth light up with curiosity made the day even more rewarding.
Despite missing out on BBQ glory, our team had an absolute blast, connecting with UTSA students, industry consultants, and local firms.
The cook-off perfectly captured the spirit of community within the engineering world, reminding us all how important it is to celebrate and collaborate as a team.
We’re already fired up for next year’s event, and a huge thank-you goes out to everyone who helped make this year’s cook-off such a resounding success!
