The City of West Palm Beach engaged WGI to transform the Banyan Boulevard corridor from what was historically considered as a dividing line between the historic Northwest Neighborhood and downtown West Palm Beach into a safe, comfortable, complete street.
The existing corridor was vehicular-focused, had limited street trees, and a lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure to create walkable connections.

To transform Banyan Boulevard into a functioning complete street, WGI provided the following services: urban planning and design, traffic engineering and transportation planning, public outreach, geotechnical testing, signalization modification, photometric and lighting design, roadway design, construction sequencing, landscape architecture, and minor utility adjustments.
WGI began by designing typical roadway sections to provide safe bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure while adhering to current Florida Design Manual standards and meeting an acceptable level of service for vehicles. Through this methodology, we created typical section alternatives with bike infrastructure, traffic calming elements, safety enhancements, lighting enhancements, wayfinding, landscape, and hardscape design.

An important element of the project was sustainable and green infrastructure. WGI used rain gardens to reduce the need for 50% more drainage structures.
These rain gardens are planted with native groundcover and help alleviate drainage issues throughout the corridor while filtering the stormwater before it enters the drainage system. The existing landscape was limited so the inclusion of native canopy trees enclose the corridor to calm traffic and provide a separation between the road and pedestrians.
