Project Spotlight: Marion County's I-75 Rest Areas

Marion County's Rest Areas, found along the bustling I-75 corridor and located just north of Orlando, FL, stand as vital pit stops for millions of travelers on a yearly basis. In a bid to enhance both the functionality and sustainability of these vital destinations, the Florida Department of Transportation - District 5 has commissioned WGI to spearhead a project to transform these high-traffic public spaces through innovative features that aim to provide a safer, more efficient, and environmentally conscious experience for visitors.

Preserving Heritage Through Design

WGI's experts played a pivotal role in this project's resilient and sustainable design efforts, providing various services, including architecture, roadway design, drainage, environmental permitting, utilities, survey, and landscape architecture. Our team of seasoned experts took a unique approach by preserving the original structure's integrity and utilizing the existing roof to create a semi-replicated canopy between two new restroom wings. This not only pays homage to the Rest Area's original intent, but also proved to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice, as it minimizes demolition and construction costs.

Safety Initiatives and Design

Prioritizing safety, the design incorporates Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles. Open areas, well-lit pathways, and direct routes provide travelers with a secure environment to visit. Additionally, the strategic bends in the restroom wings define spaces within the facility, aiding in wayfinding while also clearing sight lines from the centralized security office to ensure visibility of all public areas, entrances, and amenities.

Sustainability and Resilient Design

The Rest Area proudly boasts LEED certification, a testament to its commitment to sustainability. Resilient design elements focus on adaptability for future growth, utilizing materials like precast walls and roofs for constructability and maintenance efficiency. The facility's adaptable layout allows for potential expansion, ensuring it remains a functional and eco-friendly space for years to come.

Project Highlights:

  • LEED Certification: The Rest Area is on track to achieve LEED certification, showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility.
  • Efficient Layout: Two restroom wings, each with a unique bend, facilitate maintenance access and back-of-house operations.
  • Restroom Count: The facility includes 48 Women's, 32 Men's, and 4 Family Restrooms, equipped with amenities for the utmost convenience.
  • Parking: Separate parking for Trucks, RVs, and passenger vehicles, with provisions for future electric vehicle (EV) stations.
  • Security: A centralized security office provides clear views of the facility and surrounding parking areas.
  • Play Area: A spacious and secure play area for children adjacent to building entrances enhances overall safety.
  • Vending: An expansive vending area offers a variety of dining options, complemented by a large back-of-house storage space for consistent stocking.
  • Dog Park: Large and small dog parks with separate entry points prioritize the convenience and safety of pet owners.
Marion County's I-75 Rest Areas are undergoing a remarkable transformation, embracing sustainability, safety, and innovation. This project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful design and construction can create a welcoming and environmentally conscious space for travelers along Florida's interstate system.
