The Houseman Athletic Field is home to Central High School, part of the Grand Rapids Public Schools district. The retaining wall on the east end of the Athletic Field, constructed in 1934, is approximately 360 feet long. A chain-link fence, with metal posts embedded in the top, was attached to the wall. Cracks in the wall were located throughout, primarily under the chain link fence post and near construction joints. This area also showed signs of concrete delaminations and spalling. The 2 foot high walls at the south end of the field were also in poor condition due to freeze/thaw action.
WGI conducted a condition analysis to determine the cause of current wall problems and provided repair recommendations. Repairs were implemented to address the cited problems, including eliminating the embedded fence post connections to the wall and sidewalk removal and replacement.
