A historic roadway in Downtown Delray Beach, North Swinton Avenue needed utility and design upgrades as well as traffic calming, and transit stop
improvements. The existing corridor lacked a complete sidewalk network and the transit stops lacked alighting areas or shelters. With few full stop-controlled intersections, the road served as a truck by-pass for downtown and speeding was prevalent. Preservation of the mature tree canopy was important to the residents and the neighborhood’s identity.
To improve the roadway, WGI developed plans that turn North Swinton Avenue into a complete street. The new design provided missing sidewalk connections along this residential street and added high-visibility crosswalks. All transit stops were upgraded with ADA-compliant alighting areas and shelters were added where space permitted. The use of curb extensions and landscape nodes provides much-needed traffic calming.
The historic fabric of the corridor was maintained by carefully working around existing trees to preserve their canopy and a special suspended sidewalk detail designed to minimize impact to their root system.
