Breaking Ground: US 231 Agricultural Inspection Station

Discover how the US-231 Agricultural Inspection Station will strengthen Florida’s northern border, enhance community and agricultural safety, all while showcasing WGI’s expertise in delivering innovative, resilient infrastructure solutions.

In a major milestone for Florida’s northern border safety and agricultural protection, state and local leaders gathered last month to ceremonially break ground on a new Agricultural Inspection Station on US 231 in Jackson County. WGI was proud to be at the center of this exciting event, marking another chapter in our commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure projects that enhance the flow of goods and people.

Strengthening Agricultural Protection and Public Safety

The new facility, strategically located at the Florida-Alabama state line, will serve as the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement’s 24th Agricultural Inspection Station. Operating 24/7, the station will help protect Florida’s communities by preventing the introduction of invasive pests, unsafe agricultural products, and other potential risks into the state.

Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson emphasized the station’s importance:

“This facility will strengthen the network of inspection stations across northern Florida, ensuring our communities, roads, and agriculture remain safe and secure.”

The construction of the facility represents a major step forward in bolstering Florida’s northern border infrastructure and supporting the state’s proactive approach to community safety and agricultural protection.

WGI’s Critical Role in the Project

WGI’s multidisciplinary team was instrumental in advancing the US 231 Inspection Station from concept to construction-ready plans. In just four months, our experts completed comprehensive design and permitting efforts, enabling the selection of a contractor and an accelerated construction timeline.

Our contributions include:

  • Civil and Structural Engineering: Designing concrete-paved ramps, inspection buildings, and site structures to meet rigorous safety and durability standards.

  • Design Coordination and Permitting: Ensuring compliance with state and local regulations while streamlining approvals for rapid construction.

  • Collaborative Project Management: Working closely with FDACS, FDOT Central Office, FDOT District Three, and other stakeholders to keep the project on track and on schedule.

Transportation Expertise at the Core

Beyond structural and civil design, WGI’s transportation team played a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient vehicle flow through the inspection station. Our experts designed access ramps, vehicle circulation patterns, and traffic management solutions that optimize operational efficiency while maintaining the highest safety standards.

This project highlights WGI’s ability to integrate transportation planning and engineering into complex infrastructure projects, creating functional, resilient, and future-ready facilities.

A Milestone for WGI and the Community

The groundbreaking ceremony underscored the facility’s broader impact: protecting Florida’s agriculture, supporting community safety, and enhancing operational capabilities at the state’s northern border. For WGI, it highlighted the dedication and expertise of our structural and design teams, whose efforts made this accelerated project possible.

Construction of the US 231 Agricultural Inspection Station is underway, with the facility expected to be operational by late 2026. Once complete, it will be a vital asset for FDACS officers working to safeguard Florida’s communities and agricultural resources.
